Marcinko and Bondar Advance as Iasi First Round Begins to Take Shape

The UniCredit Iasi Open is underway on Romanian clay, and the first wave of Round 1 results has already clarified a few key sections of the draw. Second seed Petra Marcinko came through a three-set scrap with Nadia Podoroska, winning 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 to book her place in the second round. Seventh seed Anna Bondar was more clinical, seeing off Sara Sorribes Tormo 7-5, 6-4.

Elsewhere, Clara Burel showed the fight required on clay, recovering from a lost first set to beat Varvara Lepchenko 2-6, 7-5, 6-3. Alina Charaeva produced the most one-sided scoreline of the early slate, crushing Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva 6-0, 6-1.

Several of the biggest names are still waiting to take the court. Yulia Putintseva opens against Claire Liu, third seed Oleksandra Oliynykova faces Ipek Oz, and Paula Badosa is scheduled against fourth seed Anhelina Kalinina, a Round 1 clash that could reshape the bottom half before the week is out. Sixth seed Elena Gabriela Ruse and eighth seed Elsa Jacquemot also still have opening matches to play.

For TennisDraw brackets, Marcinko and Bondar are already safely through. The unfinished business, especially Badosa vs Kalinina, is where this draw can still lurch in an unexpected direction before the second round even begins.
