A Battle of Resilience at the Nansha Tennis Centre

Harriet Dart delivered one of the finest performances of her career on Friday, overcoming fifth seed Paula Badosa 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 to reach the semi-finals of the Guangzhou Open in China. The match, played at the Nansha International Tennis Centre, lasted two hours and 15 minutes and featured plenty of momentum swings. Badosa, ranked 54 places above the British qualifier, started sharply and closed out the first set after breaking Dart twice. But the 30-year-old Dart refused to be derailed, seizing control in the second set and pushing through a tense decider despite a late scare when Badosa saved a match point and broke back at 5-3. Dart then won the Spanish player's next service game without conceding a single point to seal the victory. Badosa required two medical timeouts during the match, appearing to struggle in the heat, which may have contributed to her fading in the closing stages.

A Career Resurgence Driven by a Champion Coach

This result is the highlight of a superb second half of the 2026 season for Dart, who came through two qualifying rounds before beating second seed Janice Tjen en route to the semi-finals. Her only previous WTA semi-final appearance came at the Transylvania Open in Cluj-Napoca, where she lost to Karolina Pliskova. A key factor in her revival has been her coaching partnership with former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli, who lives near Dart and began working with her earlier this year. Reaching the last four puts Dart on the edge of the world's top 100, which could earn her direct entry into the Australian Open main draw in January without needing to qualify. She will face either Claire Liu or 16-year-old Chinese wildcard Sun Xinran in Saturday's semi-final. TennisDraw users had Badosa penciled in deep into this draw, making Dart's upset one of the bracket-busting results of the week.
