Confident Starts for Britain's Contenders
Jodie Burrage and Alicia Dudeney both advanced to the second round of the Lexus Wrexham Open on day two of the World Tennis Tour W100 event at the Wrexham Tennis and Padel Centre, adding to the momentum already built by compatriot Hannah Klugman.
Burrage opened her campaign in style, dismissing Dutch player Eva Vedder 6-2, 7-5 in the first match of the day. The performance was composed and controlled throughout, and Burrage will now face a significant step up in difficulty when she takes on Germany's Noma Noha Akugue, the event's fourth seed, in the next round.
Dudeney, ranked seventh among British women, was equally convincing. She defeated Germany's Tessa Johanna Brockmann 6-4, 6-4 in a clean, businesslike display. Her reward is a second-round clash with Swiss seventh seed Susan Bandecchi, another stern examination of her credentials on the hard courts in Wales.
Charaeva Upset and the Absent Champion
Elsewhere in the draw, there was a notable storyline involving Alina Charaeva, who had grabbed attention earlier this month by stunning world number one Elena Rybakina at the China Open. However, the Armenian could not replicate that magic in Wrexham, falling to Czech player Anna Siskova in three sets after dropping the opening set and losing the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
One familiar name is missing from the competition entirely. Defending champion Mimi Xu, the Swansea-born player who won the title in 2025, chose not to return to Wales this year, instead competing at the W75 event in Saguenay, Canada.
With second-round action scheduled for Thursday, TennisDraw users will want to update their bracket picks ahead of what promises to be a compelling day of tennis in north Wales.
