Klugman Makes Her Mark on Home Soil
Seventeen-year-old Hannah Klugman continued her rise through the professional ranks with a commanding first-round win at the Lexus Wrexham Open, defeating American Fiona Crawley 6-2 6-2 at the Wrexham Tennis and Padel Centre. Currently ranked 341 in the world, the young British talent was quick to acknowledge that the margin of victory did not fully reflect the difficulty of the match, saying it "definitely was closer than the scoreline." Klugman already has good memories of this event, having reached the quarter-finals when the tournament was staged in Shrewsbury, and she will be looking to go even deeper this time around. She is also competing in doubles alongside fellow British player Daniella Britton.
Top Seed Blinkova Survives a Scare
Anna Blinkova, the French-representing former top 40 player and top seed at this W100 ITF World Tennis Tour event, had a far trickier opening match. After taking the first set 6-4 against Lithuania's Andrea Lukosiute, Blinkova found herself in serious trouble as her opponent surged to a 5-1 lead in the second set. In a remarkable turnaround, Blinkova fought back to force a tie-break and then dominated it 7-0, escaping with a straight-sets result. Elsewhere, British wildcard Britton went down in a hard-fought three-set contest against Australia's Lizette Cabrera, losing the deciding set tie-break 7-3. Notably absent from Wrexham is reigning champion Mimi Xu, who chose to compete at the W75 Saguenay event in Canada instead. The tournament runs through Sunday, October 25, with the final round of first-round matches scheduled for today. TennisDraw users have been closely tracking Klugman's projected path through the draw as one of the bracket's most intriguing British hopefuls.
