Dudeney Grinds Out an Epic Win
Day three at the Lexus Wrexham Open delivered an unforgettable home crowd moment, with Alicia Dudeney, Jodie Burrage, and Hannah Klugman all punching their tickets to Friday's quarter-finals at the Wrexham Tennis and Padel Centre.
Dudeney was the standout performer, extending her current winning streak to seven consecutive matches in what turned into a near three-hour battle against seventh seed Susan Bandecchi of Switzerland. The scoreline of 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 only tells part of the story, as the deciding set demanded serious mental fortitude from the in-form British player. She will next face French player Elsa Jacquemot in the quarter-finals.
Burrage added another quality scalp to her campaign by defeating fourth seed Noma Noha Akugue 6-1, 7-6, with the second-set tiebreak going all the way to 11-9. She will face fifth seed Marina Bassols Ribera of Spain in the last eight.
Klugman and the Top Seed Upset
There was also a superb result for 17-year-old Hannah Klugman, who continues to announce herself on the senior circuit. Klugman, who reached the French Open junior girls final last year, dispatched higher-ranked Czech player Anna Siskova 6-2, 6-4 to set up a quarter-final against sixth seed Rebecca Sramkova from Slovakia.
Elsewhere, top seed Anna Blinkova was bundled out in a major upset, losing 6-3, 6-2 to Suzan Lamens from the Netherlands. The British trio's form has been a welcome boost for home fans after defending champion Mimi Xu chose to skip the event this year and compete in Canada instead.
TennisDraw users who backed a strong British showing in Wrexham are looking very sharp heading into Friday's quarter-final action.
