Zverev Closes the Gap at the Top
Alexander Zverev's triumph at the US Open in New York has sent shockwaves through the ATP rankings. At one stage this season, the German trailed world number one Jannik Sinner by more than 9,000 points, a margin that seemed almost insurmountable. Alcaraz, the defending champion in New York, suffered a quarter-final loss to Ben Shelton and now sits 4,130 points behind second-placed Zverev. Shelton himself had a remarkable tournament, reaching his first Grand Slam final and earning a five-place jump to a career-best ranking of number four, just 880 points behind Alcaraz.
Big Movers and Notable Fallers
Frances Tiafoe, who fell to Shelton in four sets at the semi-final stage, climbed four places to a career-high of number eight, returning to the top 10 for the first time since August 2023. Karen Khachanov was among the biggest movers overall, surging 24 places to number 26 following his deep run to the semi-finals.
The most dramatic fall belongs to Novak Djokovic, who dropped seven places to number 12 after a first-round defeat to Mariano Navone. It marks the first time since 2018 that the 24-time Grand Slam champion has sat outside the top 10, closing a remarkable chapter in ranking consistency.
