A Season to Forget for the Former World Number One
Iga Swiatek has brought her 2026 season to a close, describing it as "one of the most challenging" of her career. The Polish star pulled out of the Ningbo Open with a thigh injury and shortly after confirmed she would not return to the court before the new year. The withdrawal meant she failed to qualify for the WTA Finals, marking the first time since 2019 that the six-time Grand Slam champion will miss the end-of-season showpiece. Swiatek, 25, also ends the year without a Grand Slam title for the first time since 2021, having not progressed beyond the quarter-finals at any major event in 2026. She finishes with a 42-16 win-loss record and a single WTA title, the Canadian Open in August.
A Difficult Year That Still Offered Glimmers of Hope
The season was marked by turbulence off the court as well. In March, Swiatek parted ways with Belgian coach Wim Fissette and subsequently brought in Francisco Roig, previously a coach to both Rafael Nadal and Emma Raducanu, seeking to rediscover her best tennis. Her Toronto title stood out as the clear highlight, with a notably emotional victory over Elena Rybakina hinting at a potential turnaround. A semi-final loss to fellow Polish player Maja Chwalinska in Wuhan, however, underlined the inconsistency that defined this campaign. Swiatek said she is proud of the progress made in the second half of the year and expressed confidence about what lies ahead. With the Australian Open in January offering her a chance to complete the career Grand Slam, the longer rest period could prove crucial. TennisDraw users will be watching closely when she returns to see if her bracket projections reflect a Swiatek resurgence in 2027.
