Injury Costs Swiatek Her Spot in the Field

Iga Swiatek has pulled out of the 2026 Ningbo Open with a left thigh injury, a decision that carries consequences far beyond one missed tournament. The six-time Grand Slam champion first felt the problem during her Wuhan Open semi-final against fellow Pole Maja Chwalinska, yet she pushed through despite her physiotherapy team urging her to stop. She lost the match in straight sets and later confirmed the injury had worsened enough to require rest.

In her withdrawal statement, Swiatek described an "ongoing problem with my left thigh over the past weeks" and said taking time to recover felt like the right call. She had been seeded second in Ningbo and was scheduled to face Marie Bouzkova in the second round. Lucky loser Anastasia Zakharova stepped in to take her place.

WTA Finals Door Slams Shut

The timing could hardly be worse from a qualification standpoint. After her Wuhan semi-final exit, Swiatek sat 545 points behind Karolina Muchova, who currently holds the final spot in the Race to Indian Wells standings. With Muchova not entered in either the Ningbo Open or the Pan Pacific Open in Japan, the remaining events had offered a realistic path back into contention.

Without Ningbo points, however, even a Pan Pacific title would leave Swiatek 45 points short of Muchova. Her outright qualification hopes are finished. She may still travel to Indian Wells as one of two alternates, alongside Marta Kostyuk, though her injury could prompt an early end to her season entirely.

This marks the first time since 2019 that Swiatek has missed the season-ending championship field, a sobering reminder of how difficult her 2026 campaign has been. TennisDraw users tracking the Race to Indian Wells will want to update their bracket projections accordingly.
