Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the US Open with a knee injury, adding his name to an already alarming list of absentees and dealing a major blow to the tournament's star power. Carlos Alcaraz, who had been sidelined for more than four months with a wrist injury, confirmed his fitness to compete at Flushing Meadows just before Sinner announced he would not be playing. A Season Defined by Absences
Tennis content creator and commentator Gill Gross has been among the loudest voices calling out the scale of the problem, describing the current injury situation on the ATP Tour as the worst he has ever witnessed. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Gross pointed to a troubling pattern across the entire top tier of the men's game. Jack Draper and Lorenzo Musetti, both of whom he had tipped to finish inside the top five this year, have been largely absent due to health issues. Holger Rune has not played a competitive match in 2026, and Arthur Fils has missed two Grand Slams.
Gross attributed part of the problem to equipment and physicality, arguing that lighter rackets and harder-hitting styles are driving a surge in arm injuries. He also noted that walkovers, retirements, and withdrawals have all increased in measurable ways in recent years, with the overall quality of tournaments taking what he called a significant hit. Sinner himself has played just one event since the French Open, his Wimbledon title victory earlier this season.
