A Star-Studded Absence Creates a Wide-Open Draw
The Cincinnati Open has taken a dramatic turn this year, with world number one Jannik Sinner and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz both absent through injury. The chaos did not stop there: Alexander Zverev, Novak Djokovic, and Daniil Medvedev all fell earlier than expected, leaving Taylor Fritz as the last former Masters champion in the draw. Fritz, winner of the 2022 Indian Wells Open, was eventually eliminated in the quarter-finals by fellow American Brandon Nakashima, sealing the remarkable reality: whoever lifts the trophy in Cincinnati will be a first-time ATP Masters 1000 champion.
Two Americans on a Collision Course
Nakashima, 25, is riding a wave of momentum after finishing runner-up to Ben Shelton at the Canadian Open in Montreal. His 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Fritz has pushed him to number 16 in the live rankings, with a potential rise to number 11 if he reaches the final. After the match, Nakashima credited his recent confidence: "Just getting a lot of confidence from all the matches I have been playing," he said, adding that he trusted his game fully when the pressure mounted in the deciding set.
Standing in his way is Frances Tiafoe, who dispatched tenth seed Lorenzo Musetti 7-6, 7-5 to secure his own semi-final spot. Tiafoe, who peaked at number 10 in the rankings but dropped outside the top 30 earlier this season, looks reinvigorated in Cincinnati. "The guy who plays a little more brave at certain moments gets it," Tiafoe said, pointing to his strong baseline game as the key to his form. On the other side of the draw, Flavio Cobolli and Arthur Fils will compete for the remaining final spot, both enjoying career-high live ranking surges this week. TennisDraw users have flagged Nakashima as a rising bracket favorite given his back-to-back Masters run.
