A Historic Moment in Tokyo

Elena Rybakina has officially wrapped up the year-end world No. 1 ranking after defeating fellow Kazakh Yulia Putintseva 6-2, 6-3 in the second round of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. The result means Aryna Sabalenka, who had held the top spot for 99 consecutive weeks, cannot mathematically close the gap before the season concludes. Rybakina entered the Tokyo event with 8,001 points in the WTA Race, and earning 60 points by advancing to the quarter-finals pushed her lead over Sabalenka to 1,511, just beyond the 1,500 available to an undefeated champion at the upcoming WTA Finals.

Rybakina became only the 30th woman to hold the No. 1 ranking when she first climbed to the top on September 14, having defeated Sabalenka in the US Open final just days earlier. Now she joins an even more exclusive club: the 17 women to finish a season as the top-ranked player since the WTA Rankings launched in 1975. Legends like Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, Serena Williams, and Iga Swiatek all feature on that list.

Serve Carries Rybakina Through

Against Putintseva, Rybakina was sharp from the baseline and dominant on serve, firing six aces and generating 25 winners. She faced just one break point in the entire match and saved it when closing out the second set. Rybakina credited the conditions inside the venue, noting that the closed roof combined with the court surface and ball felt perfect for her delivery. The win extended her current winning streak to five matches, following her title run at last week's Ningbo Open. She next faces Leylah Fernandez, whom she beat comfortably in the Ningbo final, in the quarter-finals before heading to Indian Wells for the WTA Finals beginning November 8. TennisDraw users will be watching closely to see if Rybakina can replicate her bracket-topping form deep into November.
