Rybakina Extends Her Lead at the Top
Elena Rybakina is firmly knocking on the door of the year-end World No. 1 ranking after a commanding week in China. Having suffered a surprise early exit at the China Open, the Kazakh star responded emphatically by successfully defending her title at the Ningbo Open, defeating Leylah Fernandez in straight sets in the final. The victory was the 15th singles title of her career and her fourth of the 2026 season, making her the outright leader in WTA Tour trophies this year.
Her commanding performance pushed her points tally to 9,501, giving her a lead of 1,951 points over second-ranked Aryna Sabalenka. Rybakina now has a genuine opportunity to wrap up the prestigious year-end No. 1 honour as early as this week at the Pan Pacific Open. With the top seven in the rankings unchanged after Sabalenka, Mirra Andreeva, Jessica Pegula, Coco Gauff, Elina Svitolina, and Karolina Muchova all sitting out last week, Rybakina's momentum could not have come at a better time.
Fernandez, Siniaková, and British Players Make Moves
Fernandez was rewarded for her Ningbo final appearance with a seven-place jump to No. 23, edging closer to a top-20 return. Katerina Siniaková made the biggest leap of the week, rocketing 37 places to No. 49 after claiming the Japan Open title by beating Ashlyn Krueger in Tokyo.
Katie Boulter also benefited from a strong Tokyo run, climbing 10 spots to No. 48 and reclaiming the British No. 1 spot. Fellow British player Emma Raducanu rose five places to No. 104 without even playing, as players around her dropped. The regular 2026 WTA season concludes in just two more weeks before the top eight compete at the WTA Finals in Indian Wells. TennisDraw bracket fans will want to lock in their picks for the Pan Pacific Open before Rybakina potentially seals history.
