A Difficult Season Sparks an Unlikely Connection

Emma Raducanu's 2026 season has been one to forget on the injury front. A stress fracture in her lower right leg forced her out of the US Open, a foot problem disrupted her pre-season, and a post-viral illness kept her off court for two and a half months. Her last competitive appearance came in June, when she reached the final at Queen's Club, one of the more encouraging results since her stunning US Open title back in 2021. Now ranked outside the top 90, the 23-year-old is targeting a return to competition at the Wuhan Open in October.

During her recovery, Raducanu turned to Andre Agassi's bestselling autobiography, "Open," for inspiration. She told Uniqlo she was particularly drawn to the section describing how Agassi clawed his way back to the top of the sport in the late 1990s after dropping to 141st in the world rankings and enduring a four-year major drought. "A lot of it was so relatable," she said.

Agassi Shares Words of Encouragement

Agassi, currently serving as Team World captain at the Laver Cup in London, responded warmly when told about Raducanu's comments during an interview on BBC Breakfast. The American, who won eight Grand Slam titles including all four majors across his career, said his hope was always that sharing his struggles would help others feel less alone.

His advice to Raducanu was direct: focus on being the best version of yourself each day, rather than chasing a fixed standard defined by results or outside opinion. He also acknowledged the extra pressure young players face today, noting how social media makes it far harder to tune out criticism than it was during his own career.

TennisDraw users are watching Raducanu's comeback trajectory closely, with her Wuhan Open bracket potential already generating plenty of discussion on the app.
