A Career Cut Short by Heartbreak

Gael Monfils has spoken candidly about the personal crisis that accelerated the end of his professional tennis career. In a livestream broadcast on his Twitch channel, the 40-year-old Frenchman revealed that his separation from Elina Svitolina left him psychologically unable to continue competing. He described the breakup as something that "hurt me deeply" and admitted he was eating less, training poorly, and struggling to picture himself back on court. His final competitive match turned out to be a second-round loss to Learner Tien at the US Open, though he had originally planned to finish his career at the Paris Masters in November.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency has since added Monfils to its official retired list and confirmed he has withdrawn from the sport's anti-doping protocols, making him ineligible for competitive play. What was meant to be a carefully chosen farewell tour became something far more abrupt and emotionally complicated.

The Human Cost Behind the Headlines

Monfils and Svitolina married in the summer of 2021 after going public with their relationship in 2019. The couple welcomed a daughter, Skai, in October 2022. Svitolina announced the end of the marriage last week, citing in part the ongoing war in Ukraine as a contributing factor to her decision.

Monfils pushed back firmly against the reaction Svitolina received online, calling public commentary "unkind at best, and venomous at worst." He acknowledged the universal difficulty of relationship breakdown, noting that facing such turmoil at the tail end of a career brought unfamiliar emotions he simply could not overcome. The former world number six said the question he kept asking himself was whether he could be "strong enough" to compete, and ultimately concluded he could not.

TennisDraw users had followed Monfils closely throughout his final campaign, making his bracket exits some of the most discussed moments on the platform this season.
