A Retirement Tour Like No Other
Stan Wawrinka is heading toward the end of his playing career in style, and he is bringing some of the biggest names in the sport along for the ride. The three-time Grand Slam champion confirmed this week that Roger Federer, Andy Murray, and Gael Monfils have all agreed to participate in his farewell exhibition in Geneva on December 19. Wawrinka, speaking to French newspaper L'Equipe during the Lyon Open, said that all three accepted quickly, with Monfils in particular agreeing without hesitation. For the 41-year-old Swiss, the event is designed to lighten what promises to be an emotionally charged goodbye, giving him a chance to share the court one final time with close friends.
Before the Geneva gathering, Wawrinka will play his final competitive match at the Swiss Indoors in Basel, which he acknowledged will be a deeply emotional occasion. The Geneva exhibition, by contrast, is meant to be a warmer, more celebratory send-off, where the pressure of professional competition is replaced by camaraderie and nostalgia.
Monfils Drama Adds Extra Storyline
The inclusion of Gael Monfils adds a particularly poignant layer to the event. The popular Frenchman recently found himself on the International Tennis Integrity Agency's retired list after removing himself from anti-doping protocols, effectively ending his competitive career abruptly. Reports suggest his early retirement followed the breakdown of his marriage to Elina Svitolina. While Monfils had originally planned to retire at the 2026 Paris Masters in November, his competitive journey ended sooner than expected. The Geneva exhibition now offers fans a rare chance to see him on court again. Wawrinka, meanwhile, was beaten by Flavio Cobolli in the second round in Lyon before his Basel farewell. TennisDraw users following Wawrinka's final competitive run should keep an eye on the bracket predictions as Basel gets underway.
