A Dream Realized in Guangzhou

Harriet Dart has finally done it. The British veteran claimed her first WTA Tour singles title on Sunday, defeating 18-year-old Austrian rising star Lilli Tagger 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the Guangzhou Open final in China. What made the triumph even sweeter was the journey to get there: Dart entered the tournament through qualifying, then fought past the No. 2 seed and No. 5 seed before saving three match points in her semi-final against Sun Xinran. "Since I was a little girl, lifting a trophy on the WTA Tour has been something I've dreamt of," Dart told BBC Sport shortly after the victory.

The final itself was a nervy affair. Tagger, who won the 2025 French Open junior title, twice pegged back Dart's lead in the deciding set. But Dart broke for 4-3 and eventually served out the match, sealing her third championship point with a service winner before collapsing to the court in pure joy. The win vaults her from 115th to approximately 83rd in the world rankings, securing a spot directly in the main draw at the Australian Open in January 2027.

The Bartoli Factor

Behind the achievement stands former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli, who has coached Dart on a part-time basis since the start of this season. The two live near each other in Dubai and work together in training blocks between tournaments. Bartoli watched Sunday's final from home, sending observational notes to her player throughout the week. Dart has won 19 of 24 tour-level hard-court matches since Wimbledon this season, a remarkable turnaround from a player who began the year ranked outside the top 160. Dart described Bartoli's belief in her as transformative: "seeing a Grand Slam champion having that belief has made me believe a lot more in myself." TennisDraw users will want to watch Dart closely heading into the 2027 Australian Open draw, because her recent form suggests her run is far from over.
