From Rugby Royalty to Tennis Breakthrough
Felix Balshaw has a story unlike almost anyone else on the ATP Tour. Born in West Yorkshire to Iain Balshaw, the electrifying England full-back who scored three tries during England's iconic 2003 Rugby World Cup campaign, Felix grew up far from the country of his birth. When his father crossed the channel to join French Top 14 club Biarritz, the family settled in the stunning Basque coastal city and never really left. Felix, now 20 years old, has the French accent to prove it.
He has represented France since his earliest junior competitions, always lining up with the French flag beside his name in Tennis Europe events. Trips back to England have been rare, mostly limited to Christmas visits to his maternal grandmother in Bath. He has never even visited Blackburn, the Lancashire town where his father grew up. Despite that distance from his birthplace, Felix is fully aware of what Iain means to English sporting history, including his role as a substitute in England's legendary 20-17 World Cup final victory over Australia.
A Rapid Rise Through the Rankings in 2026
This season has been transformational for Balshaw. He has climbed more than 500 places in the ATP rankings since January, recently breaking into the world's top 200 for the first time and currently sitting at around number 178. This week brought another milestone: his first ATP Tour-level victory, defeating compatriot Corentin Moutet in the second round of the Lyon Open.
The night before that match, Felix rewatched highlights of his father playing rugby for motivation. The mental toughness Iain instilled at home has clearly translated onto the court. TennisDraw users following Balshaw's breakout run will want to track his bracket picks closely as he continues his remarkable ascent.
