Alexandra Eala is having the kind of breakout season that tennis fans will be talking about for years. The 21-year-old from the Philippines dismantled Naomi Osaka 6-4, 6-2 in the Washington Open semifinals on Saturday, booking her spot in a maiden WTA 500 final against world number three Jessica Pegula.
Eala entered the tournament unseeded and navigated a brutally stacked draw, defeating reigning Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen in a three-set opener, then sweeping past defending champion Leylah Fernandez and second seed Elina Svitolina before dispatching Osaka without dropping a set. "Going into this tournament, I looked at the list and it was jam-packed," Eala said after her win. "Big player after big player after big player. So to be in the final really means a lot."
Her serve was a major weapon against Osaka, winning 71 percent of first-serve points and surrendering just four points on her second serve throughout the match. Eala described herself as "more well-rounded" now compared to earlier in her career, and the numbers back that up.
The win pushes Eala to a career-high ranking of 24th in the world, a staggering climb from 168th at the start of 2025. She has now recorded six victories over top-10 players this season, including ending Iga Swiatek's Wimbledon title defense in July. A win Sunday against Pegula would push her further into the top 20.
Pegula, who rallied from 5-2 down in the first set to beat Diana Shnaider 7-5, 6-4, called Eala "the future of the tour." Their only prior meeting went Pegula's way in three sets at the Miami Open earlier this season, but Eala has grown considerably since then.
