Alexandra Eala has etched her name into tennis history, becoming the first Filipino player ever to claim a WTA Tour singles title after defeating top seed Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 in a Washington Open final that required two days to complete.
Bad weather in Washington DC forced Sunday's final to be suspended, with Pegula having taken the opening set and Eala leading 2-1 in the second. When play resumed Monday, however, the 21-year-old Filipina was a transformed player. She closed out the second set and then produced a dominant decider, conceding just three games across the final two sets combined, powered by a left-handed serve and fearless baseline aggression.
Pegula, a two-time Washington champion having won the title in 2019 and 2021, was gracious in defeat. She praised Eala on court, noting how far the young star has developed since their first meetings and acknowledging the remarkable atmosphere that Eala's passionate Filipino fanbase brought to Stadium Court throughout the week.
For Eala, coached by Joan Bosch, a mentor from her years at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Manacor, the victory caps a breakthrough hard-court run in which she also defeated second seed Elina Svitolina and third seed Naomi Osaka earlier in the draw. The win extends her remarkable streak against top-10 opponents to five consecutive victories, adding Pegula to a list that already included Elena Rybakina, Svitolina twice, and Iga Swiatek.
The result propels Eala from 28th into the top 20 for the first time, earning her 500 ranking points and over $250,000 in prize money. Before the final, Pegula had called Eala the future of the tour, and this Washington title suggests that future has already arrived.
