Rivals Stumble at Crucial Moment
Novak Djokovic received a timely boost in the race to qualify for the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin after two of his closest rivals dropped points in surprising fashion. Arthur Fils, the top seed at the European Open in Brussels, fell to German veteran Jan-Lennard Struff in a pulsating three-set semifinal. Struff, 36 years old and ranked outside the top 40, produced a nerveless performance to win 6-4, 6-7(9), 7-6(5) in just under two and a half hours. Fils had even been serving for the match at 5-4 in the deciding set before Struff broke back and ultimately closed out the win. The German was gracious afterward, crediting a stunning atmosphere and his own ability to recover from being a break down twice in the final set.
Meanwhile in Lyon, Flavio Cobolli lost a three-set contest to fellow Italian Lorenzo Musetti, who pulled off a remarkable comeback after saving four match points. Musetti, the French Open champion, completed the victory past 1am local time having had barely twelve hours of rest before the match. Despite sliding from inside the top five to outside the top 20 due to an injury-disrupted 2026 season, Musetti showed his class when it mattered.
Djokovic's Path to Turin Gets Clearer
The results leave Djokovic, currently 11th in the ATP Race with 2,840 points, within striking distance of the final two qualification positions currently held by Frances Tiafoe and Rafael Jodar. Djokovic sits 319 points behind the last qualifying spot, and with events in Basel, Vienna, and the Paris Masters still on the calendar, a strong run at any of those tournaments could push him over the line. Fils, despite his Brussels loss, remains seventh in the Race with 3,575 points and is still comfortably positioned for Turin.
