Ninth Time Lucky for Struff
Jan-Lennard Struff finally got the better of Novak Djokovic on Thursday night at the Swiss Indoors in Basel, beating the 39-year-old Serbian in a gripping second-round contest. Before the match, Struff had openly acknowledged his 0-8 record against the 24-time Grand Slam champion, even calling him the greatest player of all time. Yet the 6-foot-5 German delivered an inspired performance to claim a 6-7(4), 7-5, 7-6(5) victory across two hours and 36 minutes.
Djokovic had actually taken the first set on a tiebreak, but Struff broke back late in the second to force a decider. The third set was a tight affair packed with break points at both ends, and Struff held his nerve to close it out on another tiebreak, earning the biggest scalp of his career against this particular opponent. Djokovic himself had warned before the match that the German was a dangerous, aggressive player with one of the biggest serves on tour, and that assessment proved entirely accurate.
Djokovic's Turin Dream in Real Trouble
The defeat has severely complicated Djokovic's hopes of qualifying for the ATP Finals in Turin next month. He currently sits 11th in the season-long Race to Turin standings with 2,890 points, just 40 points behind Alex De Minaur in 10th. With Jannik Sinner ruled out through injury, the ninth-place finisher in the standings can now qualify, but Djokovic faces stiff competition from Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul, who could both overtake him with strong results in Basel and Vienna this week.
Djokovic walks away from Basel with just 50 ranking points and around 37,790 euros in prize money. His most realistic path to Turin now likely runs through the Paris Masters. Struff, meanwhile, advances to face Nuno Borges in the quarter-finals. TennisDraw users who backed Djokovic to go deep in Basel will need to recalibrate their bracket picks heading into the Paris swing.
