A Troubling Picture Emerges From Monte Carlo

Jannik Sinner's ongoing knee injury is showing no signs of resolution, and the situation appears to be worsening by the day. The world No. 1 has now pulled out of five consecutive tournaments since claiming the Wimbledon title in mid-July, missing Canada, Cincinnati, the US Open, the China Open in Beijing, and most recently the Shanghai Masters. In an Instagram update over the weekend, Sinner confirmed the Shanghai withdrawal, writing that he had hoped to be ready but simply was not.

Perhaps the most alarming detail came from Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, which reported that Sinner cut short a Monte Carlo training session after just 40 minutes this week. According to the report, he told those around him he could not continue. The publication adds that his inner circle is now on high alert, and the Italian Tennis Federation shares those concerns. Despite visiting specialists in Milan, Turin, and Lyon, including a surgeon with expertise in knee conditions common among footballers, Sinner's medical team has reached no firm diagnosis and no clear prognosis.

Ranking Pressure Builds While the Calendar Slips Away

The clock is ticking in more ways than one. Alexander Zverev, who holds both the French Open and US Open titles this season, is now more than 800 points clear of Sinner in the ATP Race to Turin. While Sinner still leads the overall rankings by over 1,200 points, if Zverev wins in both Beijing and Shanghai he could overtake the Italian at the top. A previously scheduled appearance at the Six Kings Slam exhibition in Riyadh on October 21 remains on Sinner's calendar, though that too is far from guaranteed given the current situation. TennisDraw users had overwhelmingly backed Sinner to remain a dominant force deep into the season, making this absence one of the most surprising storylines of 2026.
