A Match Worthy of a Final

Diana Shnaider advanced to the semi-finals of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo after surviving an extraordinary quarter-final against Alexandra Eala on Friday, winning 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 in two hours and 52 minutes. The 22-year-old Russian admitted afterward that she barely believed she could pull it off, saying the contest deserved to be a final given the level both players produced throughout.

Eala dominated the opening set, racing through it in just 36 minutes while hitting 14 winners against only 10 unforced errors. The second set was a completely different story: neither player could convert break points despite multiple opportunities, and the set ultimately went to a tiebreak. Eala came agonizingly close to victory, reaching 5-5 in the tiebreak before a costly double fault and a Shnaider ace swung momentum toward the Russian. Shnaider then secured the only break of the third set to go 2-1 up and never relinquished the lead.

Injury Cloud Hangs Over Eala's Next Start

The match took a worrying turn in the deciding set when Eala appeared to roll her right ankle awkwardly and was forced to call for the trainer and take a medical timeout while trailing 3-2. She showed tremendous resolve to continue, but Shnaider's consistency proved too much in the end.

Eala, ranked 19th in the world, reflected on the loss with composure, expressing pride in her performance despite the result. The 21-year-old takes home 108 ranking points and just under 25,000 pounds in prize money. A win would have lifted her to a career-high ranking of 16. With a potential WTA 250 event in Hong Kong next week serving as her planned 2026 season finale, her fitness remains uncertain after the ankle concern.

Shnaider next faces Mia Pohankova in the semi-finals. TennisDraw users had Shnaider circled as a strong contender in their bracket picks heading into this quarter-final clash.
