From Bridesmaid to Champion: A Finals Record Transformed
Elena Rybakina completed a stunning title defence at the Ningbo Open on Sunday, overpowering Leylah Fernandez in a brisk 76-minute final to claim her fourth WTA title of 2026. The 6-2, 6-2 scoreline was emphatic, and Rybakina did not drop a single point on the four break points she faced throughout the match, closing it out with a forehand winner on her first match point.
It is the first time Rybakina has successfully defended a singles title anywhere on the WTA Tour, and she went 8-0 for her career in Ningbo, a venue she now openly treasures. The victory is particularly meaningful given her difficult start to the Asian swing, which included a shocking first-round exit against world No. 118 Alina Charaeva at the China Open. Bouncing back in Ningbo felt personal. Her composure in finals also tells a bigger story: after winning just four of her first 13 finals, Rybakina has gone 11-4 in her last two and a half years at that stage of tournaments. She credited a calmer mindset, recalling how she used to grow genuinely frustrated when titles slipped away.
World No. 1 Closing In on Year-End Glory
This fourth title of the year, joining the Australian Open, Stuttgart Open, and US Open trophies, pushes Rybakina's 2026 win total to 53, ahead of Mirra Andreeva and Jessica Pegula. With 9,501 points in the live rankings and a gap of nearly 2,000 points over Aryna Sabalenka, Rybakina is on the cusp of securing the year-end No. 1 ranking.
Fernandez, despite the loss, has enjoyed a strong autumn run, winning the Singapore Open last month before reaching this final. She moves from No. 30 toward No. 23 in the rankings. Rybakina now heads to the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo before defending her title at the season finale in Indian Wells starting November 8. TennisDraw users had Rybakina as one of the most-backed picks to go deep in Ningbo, and she delivered in style.
