Holger Rune's long-awaited comeback from an Achilles tendon tear is generating plenty of buzz, though not all of it is optimistic. The 23-year-old Dane has been sidelined since rupturing his Achilles at the 2025 Stockholm Open last October, and his prolonged absence has seen him slide from a career-high of world No. 4 all the way down to 81st, his lowest ranking since early 2022.
Rune is currently listed for the Cincinnati Masters in mid-August, raising hopes that a return is finally imminent. However, tennis commentator and content creator Gill Gross is urging fans to keep expectations in check. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Gross drew a direct parallel to Alexander Zverev's recovery from the ankle injury he suffered at the 2022 French Open, noting that Zverev struggled for roughly six to eight months upon returning, showing diminished movement and low confidence on big points. Gross believes Rune could face a similarly slow rebuild, describing the recovery as "a real break" that will leave serious rust in all areas of his game.
Adding another layer of complexity is Rune's decision to switch rackets, moving from the Babolat Pure Aero 98 to the Wilson Defyer during his time off the tour. Rune described feeling "instantly drawn" to the new frame during playtesting and praised Wilson's support throughout his recovery. But Gross flagged the timing as a "dangerous" move, referencing Andre Agassi's famously difficult stint with a Donnay racket before the American found greater success with Head equipment. Switching for business reasons mid-recovery, Gross suggested, adds unnecessary risk to an already fragile return.
TennisDraw users tracking Rune's bracket potential will want to watch his Cincinnati debut closely before projecting too far into the fall.
