Norrie's resurgence in Mexico is particularly striking given the context heading into the tournament. He arrived in Los Cabos having suffered six straight losses, with his last victory dating back to April. A first-round exit at the French Open in May compounded a difficult stretch, and he later admitted he had "overtrained a little bit" in the build-up to Roland Garros.
But three straight-set wins later, the confidence is clearly flowing again. After a comfortable opener against Aleksandar Kovacevic, Norrie showed real grit in round two by recovering from 3-0 down against James Duckworth before closing out that match convincingly. Against Tomic, a 33-year-old lucky loser from qualifying, he was simply unstoppable after the opening game.
"I was very solid, I returned well, I made a lot of tough balls when I needed to, and I kept him moving," Norrie said following the match. He also joked that the brisk win allowed him "to go to bed a little bit earlier," a lighthearted nod to the lopsided nature of the contest.
