Brandon Nakashima walked away from Rio de Janeiro with one of the biggest paydays of his career after claiming the Ultimate Tennis Showdown title on Sunday. The American collected a remarkable $368,800 prize, defeating 17-year-old Brazilian wildcard Guto Miguel in the final by a 3-0 scoreline across tightly contested quarters.
The path to the title was not straightforward. Nakashima had to get past Nick Kyrgios in a scintillating semi-final, winning 3-1 in a match loaded with spectacular shot-making from both sides. Kyrgios himself had been in brilliant form earlier in the tournament, knocking out home favourite Joao Fonseca during the group phase and dashing Brazilian hopes of a local champion.
Despite not reaching the final, the prize money structure at UTS ensured no player left empty-handed. Kyrgios and Francisco Cerundolo each earned $123,000, while Fonseca collected $119,600 despite his early exit. Miguel's runner-up cheque of $214,200 was an especially meaningful windfall given that his entire career prize money before the event stood at just $66,714.
Nakashima was clearly delighted with the experience, describing it as a great couple of days and calling his debut in Brazil and first UTS appearance something he was genuinely thankful for.
