Karolina Muchova delivered one of the most nerve-shredding performances in recent Wimbledon memory on Thursday, saving a match point before outlasting Coco Gauff 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (12-10) in a sweltering Centre Court semi-final to reach her first final at SW19.
The 10th seed dominated the opening set with clinical precision, forcing errors from an uncharacteristically sloppy Gauff and converting a double-break lead. But a bathroom break transformed the American, who returned a different player, eventually breaking through on her ninth opportunity with a stunning cross-court backhand and blazing through the next four games to level the match.
What followed in the deciding set was pure theatre. Twenty-two points, 18 minutes, and three match points packed into a tie-break that had 15,000 fans on Centre Court barely breathing. Muchova raced to a 4-1 lead despite appearing to feel pain in her side, producing a jaw-dropping diving volley and cracking a 114mph ace to stay ahead. Gauff clawed back and reached match point on her own serve, only to dump a straightforward forehand into the net tape in one of the afternoon's cruelest moments.
Muchova, 29, also squandered a match point before eventually clinching victory, burying her face in her towel as the magnitude of the win sank in. "It was a rollercoaster, match point and then match point down," she said, visibly shaking.
For Gauff, the two-time Grand Slam champion, it was a painful near-miss. Muchova's only previous major final came at the 2023 French Open, where Iga Swiatek defeated her.
