Jodar Outclasses Medvedev in Straight Sets

Daniil Medvedev's run at the 2026 Shanghai Masters came to a halt in the semifinals when Spanish teenager Rafael Jodar produced a commanding 6-3, 6-4 victory. Jodar never looked troubled throughout the match, and his win secured a place in his very first Masters-level final. Medvedev had shown excellent form earlier in the tournament, eliminating Stefanos Tsitsipas, Tommy Paul, and Jan-Lennard Struff, but Jodar was simply a class above in their semifinal encounter.

At his post-match press conference, Medvedev was generous in his assessment of the teenager. He acknowledged that Jodar's return game was the decisive factor, noting that his own serve lacked the precision needed to neutralize the pressure being applied from the other side of the net. Medvedev also commented on Jodar's broader standing on tour, pointing out that Jodar is already firmly inside the top ten, and predicted he would remain there for a long time. However, Medvedev stopped short of crowning Jodar a future Grand Slam champion, saying only time will tell how many majors any player accumulates.

ATP Finals Race Heats Up Heading to Basel and Paris

Jodar's win sets up an all-Spanish final against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, and it significantly boosts his chances of qualifying for the ATP Finals. Currently sitting ninth in the qualification race, Jodar would climb inside the top eight by winning the Shanghai title. Medvedev, meanwhile, remains comfortably placed at sixth in the race and appears close to confirming his spot.

Following Shanghai, Jodar is scheduled to compete at the Swiss Indoors in Basel starting October 26, and then at the Paris Masters from November 2, giving him valuable opportunities to lock in qualification.
