A Comeback Story for the Ages
Sonay Kartal has written one of the most compelling stories of the 2026 season, and she is not finished yet. The 24-year-old Briton defeated fifth seed Elina Svitolina 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 in the quarter-finals of the Wuhan Open on Friday, booking her place in her maiden WTA 1000 semi-final. It is her sixth win from eight matches since returning from a stress fracture in her back, an injury that sidelined her for nearly seven months this season. Using a protected ranking to enter the tournament, Kartal had slipped to 170 in the world but has since rocketed 83 places in the live rankings, surging past fellow Britons Emma Raducanu and Francesca Jones in the process.
Kartal had blazed through earlier rounds without dropping a set, knocking out ninth seed Belinda Bencic and 15th seed Jasmine Paolini before this latest triumph. Against Svitolina, she broke early in the opening set to build momentum, but Svitolina, who received a medical timeout for her right arm, rallied fiercely to level the match. Kartal held her nerve in the decider, breaking at 5-4 to close out the win. She is now only the second British woman, after Johanna Konta, to reach a WTA 1000 semi-final since the format launched in 2009.
What Comes Next in Wuhan
Kartal faces former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko on Saturday, after the Latvian overcame 11th seed Diana Shnaider 7-6, 6-1. Speaking courtside after her win, Kartal called it "solid composure" from herself throughout and celebrated "breaking new ground" at this level. A victory over Ostapenko could lift her as high as 50th in the world. TennisDraw users who backed Kartal as a sleeper pick this week are looking very smart right now.
