From Wimbledon Wildcard to Davis Cup Pick
Arthur Fery is continuing his remarkable rise through the tennis world, earning a place in Great Britain's Davis Cup squad to face Ecuador at London's Copper Box Arena on September 19 and 20. The 24-year-old, who entered Wimbledon ranked 114th in the world and somehow reached the semi-finals as a wildcard, has since climbed to a career-high ranking of 36. His Wimbledon performance made him the lowest-ranked player to reach the final four at the All England Club since Goran Ivanisevic did it back in 2001.
Fery expressed genuine pride at the selection, noting that playing on home soil in the World Group with a spot in the final eight on the line will bring its own unique pressure. The squad also includes British number one Cameron Norrie, doubles specialists Henry Patten and Lloyd Glasspool, with a fifth player set to be confirmed closer to the tie.
Draper's Absence and Fery's Cincinnati Test
Notably absent from the squad is Jack Draper, who has endured a difficult 12 months due to a persistent arm injury. The former world number four has seen his ranking tumble to as low as 160th and was recently emotional on court during his first competitive match since June, breaking down mid-match before he could complete it.
Fery himself arrives at this Davis Cup tie off a tough result, losing 7-5, 7-6 to world number eight Alex de Minaur in the Cincinnati Masters third round on Monday. Despite fighting back impressively after a rain delay, his Australian opponent eventually controlled the tiebreak and closed out the win. The tie against Ecuador will be Fery's first competitive match on English soil since his unforgettable Wimbledon run.
TennisDraw users were heavily backing Fery as a breakout contender throughout this summer's tournaments.
