Roger Federer is heading back to Arthur Ashe Stadium on August 25th for a highly anticipated appearance at the US Open, and the build-up to his return has been a fascinating mix of tennis, travel, and friendship.
Federer last competed at Flushing Meadows seven years ago, but his legacy there remains untouched. He is the only player in the Open Era to win five consecutive US Open titles, a streak that ran from 2004 through 2008. His overall record at the tournament includes two additional final appearances, cementing his status as one of the event's all-time greats.
This time around, Federer will share the court with Andy Roddick, Andre Agassi, and John McEnroe in what promises to be a celebration of tennis royalty.
So how has the 20-time Grand Slam champion been spending his summer? Quite productively, it turns out. At Wimbledon, he was spotted hitting balls at Aorangi Park alongside his son, a charming glimpse into his off-tour life. He also found time to tee up with Rafael Nadal on the golf course, and the two former rivals have been inseparable lately.
Federer also visited Nadal's academy in Spain in July, where he toured a brand-new museum launched to coincide with Nadal's Netflix series. Federer described the experience as deeply moving, calling the museum beautiful and praising the entire team behind it.
Before New York, Federer will also be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame and will compete in the Hall of Fame Celebrity Pro Classic on grass, his first grass-court action since Wimbledon 2021.
