Alex Eala's campaign at the Canadian Open in Toronto is gathering serious momentum, and the bracket is beginning to look increasingly kind to the 21-year-old Filipino sensation.
Eala navigated a tricky second-round clash against Alycia Parks, winning 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 in what doubled as a touch of revenge. Parks had eliminated Eala at the Australian Open earlier this year, making this victory feel particularly satisfying. Next up is a third-round meeting with Caty McNally, ranked around world No. 70, which is a considerably softer assignment than what was originally projected.
Eala had been expected to face Linda Noskova, described as a Wimbledon champion, but McNally produced a straight-sets stunner to eliminate the Czech player in Toronto. That result is especially significant given Eala's 0-10 record against Czech players at WTA level. Dodging that matchup could prove enormous.
