Alexandra Eala has shed light on the emotional decision to withdraw from the planned doubles partnership with Venus Williams at the Mubadala DC Open, citing a need to conserve her physical and mental energy for singles competition.
The two had originally been awarded a wildcard entry for the women's doubles at the WTA 500 event in Washington, but over the weekend it was confirmed that Williams would instead team up with Diana Shnaider. Williams herself kept the door open, noting she would love for future opportunities to arise with Eala.
Speaking at her press conference, the 21-year-old Filipina was candid and gracious in explaining her reasoning. She expressed deep admiration for Williams, describing her as someone who deserves a partner fully committed physically, emotionally, and mentally. Eala acknowledged that right now, with this being her first week back on tour, she can only offer that level of dedication to singles play. Her words carried genuine warmth, and she expressed hope that the partnership could resume down the line.
The two previously joined forces on the grass at the Bad Homburg Open in June, reaching the quarterfinals before falling to the second-seeded pairing of Olivia Nicholls and Tereza Mihalikova.
Eala faces a demanding opener in singles, drawing Zheng Qinwen, the 2024 Australian Open runner-up, in the first round. Zheng has endured a difficult stretch recently, exiting in the opening round at both the French Open and Wimbledon.
