A Hard-Fought Return to Basel
Novak Djokovic made his return to the Swiss Indoors in Basel count, overcoming Frenchman Ugo Humbert 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in two and a half hours to record his 20th tour-level victory of 2026. It marked an extraordinary milestone in itself: the 39-year-old has now reached that wins tally in 21 consecutive seasons on tour. Djokovic last played in Basel back in 2011, and his relationship with the Swiss city is rich in history. He famously claimed the title there in 2009, defeating Roger Federer in the final.
Humbert came out swinging from the opening point, striking the ball cleanly and taking time away from Djokovic with a relentlessly aggressive approach. The Frenchman broke serve and closed out the first set 6-4. Djokovic, acknowledging this was his first indoor match of the season, admitted he felt rusty early on. He saved crucial break points at the start of the second set, found his footing, broke Humbert's serve to go ahead, and never really looked back. Humbert did call for a medical timeout citing a back problem when trailing 4-1 in the second, but Djokovic stayed composed and sealed the match with a forehand winner down the line.
The Race to Turin Tightens
The win carries significant weight beyond Basel. Djokovic moved into 10th place in the ATP Tour Race to Turin, climbing just above Alex de Minaur, but he still trails Rafael Jodar, who currently holds the final qualification spot for the season-ending ATP Finals. Jodar also picked up points in his opening match, meaning Djokovic likely needs to go deep, possibly winning the title, to secure a record 19th Finals appearance. He is also chasing his 103rd career title, which would draw level with Federer's mark for second-most in the Open era. TennisDraw users tracking the Basel draw have Djokovic as a strong contender to advance through the later rounds.
