From Retirement to Contender in Eight Days

Just over a week ago, Alex de Minaur was limping off the court in Beijing after being forced to retire from the China Open final against Novak Djokovic with a groin injury. Many observers feared his season was effectively over. Instead, the Australian has turned the story completely around, fighting his way into the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Rolex Masters with wins over Rei Sakamoto and Karen Khachanov.

Speaking to reporters after advancing, de Minaur was candid about his recovery, explaining that each day has brought noticeable improvement since that painful exit in Beijing. He credited his medical team and personal focus on rehabilitation, adding that his match in Shanghai was by far his best day physically and that he complemented the physical progress with sharp serving and smart tactical play. It was, by his own assessment, a very clean performance.

A Tough Road Ahead, but Reasons for Optimism

De Minaur will face the winner of Alexander Zverev versus Alexander Bublik in the quarterfinals. The head-to-head picture with Zverev is complicated: the German leads their ATP Tour series by eight wins to zero, including victories at Shanghai, Indian Wells, and the Italian Open. However, de Minaur has beaten Zverev in their two most recent meetings, both at the Laver Cup, and also holds wins over the German at the United Cup and the ATP Cup.

If de Minaur can find a way past Zverev, only Felix Auger-Aliassime and Daniil Medvedev remain in the draw ranked above him, making a deep run very realistic. A strong finish in Shanghai could also secure his spot at the ATP Finals later this year. TennisDraw users have been backing de Minaur as a sleeper pick to go all the way in Shanghai.
