Ben Shelton has delivered some of the most thrilling tennis on the ATP Tour in 2026, but his coach and father Brian Shelton is not shying away from the uncomfortable truth: the American's aggression is both his greatest weapon and his biggest liability.

Speaking on the Tennis Insider Club alongside Caroline Garcia, Brian Shelton described the challenge of managing a player who thrives on all-out attacking tennis. "There are times when he crosses that line and sabotages himself," the coach explained, noting that this tendency has cost Shelton dearly at the bigger events this year.

The numbers tell a complicated story. Three ATP Tour titles in Dallas, Munich, and Stuttgart paint the picture of a player in terrific form. Yet Shelton stumbled in the first round at Wimbledon, a tournament many expected him to go deep in given Carlos Alcaraz's absence. He also exited early at both Indian Wells and Miami, two events where American fans had hoped for a strong run.

Beyond tactics, Brian Shelton opened up about the unique pressures of coaching his own son at the elite level. Balancing the roles of father and coach requires constant emotional awareness, he said, knowing when Ben wants to talk tennis and when he simply needs space. That attentiveness, Brian believes, is what keeps their relationship functioning well despite the inevitable tension.

Shelton sits at World No. 8 heading into the Washington Open, where he has accepted a wildcard entry. Having reached the semifinals there in 2025, he will need to go at least one round further just to protect his ranking points.

TennisDraw users will be watching his Washington draw closely, with many bracket picks hinging on whether Shelton can finally channel his firepower without the self-inflicted errors.
