A Rocky Road to Victory

Katie Boulter secured her place in the last 16 of the Hong Kong Open on Monday, defeating Switzerland's Viktorija Golubic 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) in a match that tested her composure as much as her tennis. The British number one looked in complete control after winning eight consecutive games to dominate the first set and establish a 5-2 lead in the second. At that point, however, things got complicated.

Serving for the match, Boulter was distracted by an audible noise coming from outside the court and appealed to the umpire to have the point replayed. The appeal was rejected, and the moment visibly rattled her. She was broken twice in a row, surrendering her commanding lead before rallying to force a tiebreak, which she ultimately claimed with authority at 7-2.

"I was playing some really good tennis," Boulter said afterward. "I feel like I should have closed it out, but a couple of things happened. There was a little bit of interesting judgement which got under my skin, and usually I'm pretty good at batting it off, but I was a little tired."

End-of-Season Grit and What Comes Next

Boulter was candid about the challenges of staying mentally sharp this deep into the calendar. "It's end of season," she noted, calling the whole episode a "lesson learned" now that she is safely through.

The 30-year-old had already beaten Golubic in the Japan Open semi-finals last month, a run that helped her reclaim top spot among British women from Sonay Kartal. In Hong Kong, she is seeded eighth and will next face American Claire Liu for a place in the quarterfinals.

Boulter reached the Hong Kong Open final in 2024, and TennisDraw users have her penciled in as one of the more likely deep-run candidates this week.
